Dice Wars

Dice WarsI found this Risk-like online game called Dice Wars and have quickly become addicted to it. I can’t find any rules, so I had to learn how to play via trial-and-error. Here’s a summary so you, the Major Reader at home, can play along.

You always play purple against 1-7 computer-controlled opponents on an abstract map divided into territories that you and your enemies control. The goal is to invade other territories until you control the entire map.

In the beginning, everyone has an equal strength of “armies” represented by dice in “countries” distributed more-or-less evenly on the map. The number of dice in a country is the number of dice you can roll against an opponent when you invade his space. If you roll higher than your opponent, you move all your armies but one into that space.

You can keep invading on your turn until you are down to only 1 army/die in each of your territories (though that’s not recommended). At the end of your turn, you are awarded additional dice based on how many territories you control. The new armies are distributed by the computer, seemingly at random but possibly to try to fortify your positions a bit (I can’t tell). The most dice/armies a space can have is eight.

It’s insanely hard to devise the right path to take through your enemies’ territories without leaving yourself vulnerable. And since you can’t re-distribute your own troops or determine where new ones go, you often end up with a massive build-up in an isolated spot deep within your territory while your fronts are relatively unprotected.

I’ve played a dozen or so times tonight and I’ve only won once in 5-player mode.

Good luck.
