Ray woke up at 5:15 this morning and didn’t go back to sleep (which makes it more of an awful day for Amy and him, but whatever). Since I was up, I decided I’d get into work early since I have a boat-load of stuff to do and a lot of meetings today. I skipped breakfast and headed for the bus stop.
I missed my bus by about 30 seconds. When I arrived to the bus stop, I was greeted by a huge pool of fresh vomit on the ground in front of the bench. Already, things were not pleasant, but they were to get worse.
I got to campus later than I would have liked, but earlier than usual. I stopped by my favorite little campus eatery for breakfast, only to learn that it didn’t open until half-hour later. Hungry, tired, and already grumpy, I picked up a bagel at another place and headed to my office….
… only to discover that I had left my keys at home. With no one scheduled to be in for an hour or so, I trudged up to the Dean’s Office (in another building) and sought out the woman in charge of keys. Luckily, she was in….
… but she was no longer in charge of keys. Nonetheless, she knew where they were and helped me look for keys to my suite and my office (2 separate keys). Eventually, after rooting through bags labeled things like “Miscellaneous Unknown Keys” for 15 minutes, we gave up.
I called the manager of my building on the off-chance that he’d be in that early, and he was! He unlocked my doors and I settled in to prepare for my first meeting, disappointed that I was now an hour behind schedule.
My first meeting was across campus, south of the medical center. After a brisk 15-minute walk, I find the guy I’m meeting with and we sit and wait for the network engineer who’s also supposed to come…
… and who never shows up. After 20 minutes, I check my watch and realize that I have just enough time to grab something else to eat before my next meeting — a performance review of one of my staff (always a fun topic).
So, I head out again and pick up some food and walk to the other end of campus for my next meeting….
… only to be greeted by the staff person who explains that he’s in the middle of fixing a server and asks if we can meet tomorrow. Fine.
Back to my office. It’s now 11:00 and I have gotten zero done today despite getting out of the house at 6:00.
